Canthal tilt: how to read the angle

Learn what positive, neutral and negative canthal tilt mean, how head position changes photos, and why an eye angle is not an attractiveness score.

The canthi are the corners where the upper and lower eyelids meet. The inner corner is near the nose; the outer corner is nearer the temple. Canthal tilt describes the slope of a line between those corners relative to a horizontal reference. The anatomical landmarks are described in the American Academy of Ophthalmology's EyeWiki anatomy guide.

These are direction labels. “Positive” does not mean good and “negative” does not mean bad. The definitions depend on the reference line and the way the image was taken. The labels do not provide an attractiveness score.

Why head position changes the result

A study published in Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum photographed 12 adult women at different head angles and found that head tilt changed the eye area's apparent shape. A downward head tilt made positive intercanthal tilt look more pronounced in the study images. That is a change in the photographed view, not evidence that the anatomy changed. Read the head-position study.

A line drawn on a rotated selfie also follows the image's rotation. If two photos use different camera heights, head positions or crops, comparing the drawn angles can be misleading. A precise-looking number does not remove those differences.

How to compare the eye area in two photos

  1. Use similar camera positions. Keep the camera level and use the same distance for both photos.
  2. Keep a relaxed, forward-facing pose. Avoid comparing a tilted or turned head with a straight-on view.
  3. Check that both corners are visible. Shadows, glasses, hair and blur can hide the landmarks.
  4. Keep the original images. Avoid beauty filters, perspective edits and rotations that change the view.
  5. Describe what you can see. If the corners are unclear, the useful conclusion is that the photo is unsuitable for comparison.

This checklist helps you compare photographs. It does not turn an ordinary selfie into a clinical measurement.

Canthal tilt and face ratings

Online looksmaxing scales sometimes treat one feature as a shortcut to a total score. MyFaceRating does not convert canthal tilt into a score, rank eye shapes or provide treatment advice. Our feedback considers the submitted photo and suggests changes such as light, framing and expression.

If your goal is a clearer profile photo, start with the whole image: are your eyes visible, is the expression right for the setting, and is the crop useful? Those are choices you can compare without assigning a grade to an eye angle. The rate my face page explains how to prepare a photo for that kind of feedback.

Questions about canthal tilt

What is positive canthal tilt?

It describes an outer eye corner that sits higher than the inner corner against the chosen horizontal reference. Positive describes the direction of an angle; it is not a grade.

What does negative canthal tilt mean?

It describes an outer eye corner that sits lower than the inner corner against the chosen horizontal reference. The label alone does not establish health, attractiveness or a need to change anything.

Why does my canthal tilt look different in selfies?

Head position and the camera view can change the apparent angle. A study of head tilt found changes in the photographed eye area, including apparent intercanthal tilt. Compare photos taken with similar head and camera positions.

Does MyFaceRating measure canthal tilt?

No. Our report gives a subjective photo impression and suggestions about presentation. It does not return a measured canthal angle or use one angle as a universal beauty standard.
